The 2004 music assessments included six assessment tasks that involved creating music.

All of these tasks were identical for year 4 and year 8 students. Two are trend tasks (fully described with data for both 2000 and 2004), two are released tasks (fully described with data for 2004 only), and two are link tasks (to be used again in 2008, so only partially described here).

Three of the tasks were administered in one-to-one interviews, with the other three administered in team or group format.

The task details and results for the two trend tasks are presented in the first section, followed by the task details and results for the released tasks. The third section contains some task information and the results for the two link tasks.

Comparing Results for Year 4 and Year 8 Students
Averaged across 18 task components used with both year 4 and year 8 students, 10 percent more year 8 than year 4 students or teams produced good responses. This indicates that, on average, students have made useful but modest progress between year 4 and year 8 in the skills assessed by the tasks. Year 8 students tended to be markedly stronger than year 4 students in the technical aspects of tasks, but weaker in displaying vitality and colour in their performances.

Trend Results: Comparing the 2000 and 2004 Results
Two trend tasks involving a total of six components were administered to students in both the 2000 and 2004 assessments. Because of the small number of task components involved, and the consequent limitations of the reliability of the trend data, the trends for creating music tasks across the four year period will not be reported. However, overall trends based on all of the 10 trend tasks (in Chapters 3 to 6) have been reported in the Summary.
