Approach: Team Level: Year 4
5.5MB
Focus: Effects of environment on lifestyle.
Resources: Picture of town, picture of country, similar/different chart, 12 activity cards, recording book.
Questions/instructions:
Point to town picture, then to country picture.
Mike lives in a big town.
Kate lives in the country. It takes 10 minutes in a 4-wheel drive to get to her next-door neighbour’s farm, and almost an hour to drive to the nearest township.
I want you to think about what it would be like for Mike and his family living in a big town, and what it would be like for Kate and her family living a long way from their neighbours and town.
Some of the things they do will be similar or the same, even though they live in very different places. Some of the things they do will be quite different because of where they live.
Show chart.
This chart has two boxes – one says SIMILAR OR SAME, and the other says DIFFERENT.
In a moment I’m going to give each of you 3 cards. The cards will say some of the things people do. When you get your cards I want you to think quietly to yourselves about whether Mike and Kate would do these things in a SIMILAR or DIFFERENT way. Don’t talk about it to the others in the group until I tell you.
Give a set of 3 cards of the same colour to each student i.e. student 1 gets the blue cards, student 2 gets the red cards, etc. Allow a short time for students to read and think about their cards without discussion.
Now I’m going to ask you one at a time to show the others your cards. As you show each card, ask the group if they think it would be SIMILAR or DIFFERENT for Mike and Kate because of where they live. The group might want to talk about their reasons. When the group agrees, put the card in the box they have chosen.
Just show one card when you have your first turn. When everyone has shown their first card, we will take turns to show the second then third cards.
We’ll start with [B1 - student’s name].
Name each student in turn to show their cards to the others in the group.
Once all cards have been placed, record the card numbers on the recording sheet. Then say:
Now I want you to think about what would be the most fun thing about living in the country, at a place like Kate’s. All of you need to try to agree on one thing. I’ll give you 2 minutes to talk about it, then I’ll ask what you decided would be the most fun thing.
Allow 2 minutes for discussion.
Now tell me one thing that would be most fun about living in the country.
To finish off, I would like you to think about what would be the most difficult thing about living in the country, at a place like Kate’s. All of you need to try to agree on one thing. I’ll give you 2 minutes to talk about it, then I’ll ask what you decided would be the most difficult thing.
Allow 2 minutes for discussion.
Now tell me what would be the most difficult thing about living in the country.
