Commentary:
Year 8 students performed only slightly better than year 4 students, mainly in the interactiveness of their comments. There was little change between 1998 and 2002.

YEAR 4 – HIGH RANGE:
Boy: am I sick mum? do I have to go to school 
Father: you can stay in Bed do you want to go to the Docters? You sould
Mother: yes dear I think you are No you don’t have to go to school 
Cat: I don’t want them there ugly! 
Boy: I don’t fell so good dad and mom
Father: Are you ok son, do you want some pills ha.
Mother: It looks like chiken pokes, hunney sile we take him to the docder.
Cat: yucky red spots, Just as wall im not a humine Im going to lice misalfe
YEAR 4 – MID RANGE:
Boy: I don’t feel good
Father: We’ll have to take you to hospital
Mother: Oh No
Cat: I’m hungry
Boy: can We See a docter
Father: have a rest son
Mother: It’s chiken Pocks
Cat: now i can’t liy on his bed
YEAR 8 – HIGH RANGE:
Boy: Oh, Mum, Dad I feel sick and I have red bumps all over me
Father: O.K. I hope it doesn’t last long. And I hope it doesn’t cost much for the doctor.
Mother: It looks like he has chicken pocks. You better call the doctor
Cat: I’m glad I don’t look like that.
Boy: What are these thing chicken poks. Am I going to turn into a chicken.
Father: By crikey son your turning into a chicken. Just joshing. You have chicken poks
Mother: Please do. not itch it makes it worse if you itch
Cat: Meow, Meow, MeowChicken, Chicken, Chicken
YEAR 8 – MID RANGE:
Boy: I feel sick
Father: It looks like you’ve got the measles
Mother: Hurry up and I’ll take you to the doctor
Cat: Who’s that person
Boy: Not to feel Dad!
Father: “Ben do you feel alright”?
Are you itchy
Mother: Oh dear! I think he might have chickenpox. I better go call the doctor
Cat: Red spots, not good.
