Questions
/ instructions:
[Slightly different for year 8, see
commentary.] In this activity you are going to work in pairs. I want [C1 name]
and [C2 name] to work as one pair, and [C3 name] and [C4 name] to work as the
other pair.
Show the two pictures
Imagine your class is going on two trips the first is a day trip to the
beach, the second is a weekend camping in the bush. Your team is to think about
the safety of the class on both of these trips. When people are doing things in
places like the ones shown in these pictures, there is often the possibility of
risks and dangers to their safety. We can help avoid danger and accidents by knowing
what the risks might be. We can also help avoid danger and accidents by knowing
how to deal with risks.
[C1 and C2] are to start with the beach trip, and [C3 and C4] the camping trip.
In your pairs I want you to study the pictures and write down all of the possible
risks and dangers there could be to people's safety in these places.
Point to the places on the answer sheet where students record the risks, and
give out pictures.
You have three minutes to do this, then I want you to share your ideas with the
rest of the group.
Allow 3 minutes
Now I would like each pair of students to share your ideas with the others. When
doing that, the group needs to decide on four of the most serious risks and dangers
for each picture then write them on the group answer sheet. Once you have chosen
four serious risks or dangers for each trip, your whole group is to think of as
many ways to avoid each of those dangers as you can.
Point to the group answer sheet
Beside each risk or danger write down the things which could be done to avoid
that danger. |

Commentary:
Year 8 students were only marginally superior to year 4 students, except for their
ideas for avoiding dangers at the bush camp. This may in part have been because
the teacher wrote down the ideas for year 4 students, while the year 8 students
were asked to write down their ideas themselves. |
