analysing and classifying information
: New Zealand Sports People
Approach: Team
728k
Resources: Envelope containing: 24 newspaper clippings (in a set order) and 6 folders; instruction card; 4 ballpoint pens.

Questions / instructions:
Give the newspaper clippings to the students in the order they are arranged. Show the instruction card while explaining the activity.
In this activity you are going to work with information for doing a project on New Zealand sports people. There is a heap of information and you won't have time to read it all. You will need to skim to find out what you need to know.
First you need to sort the information. Sort it into 4, 5 or 6 piles. You will need to think about how to do this, remembering that the information is for a project about New Zealand sports people. You don't have to use all of the information. Some may not be suitable, and could go into one pile. You can start sorting the information into 4, 5 or 6 piles.

Give out the newspaper clippings.
Don't give out the folders until the sorting part of the activity has been done.

Now that you have sorted the information into piles, check to see that you are happy with the way you've sorted them.
Allow time.
Now think of a suitable title which describes each pile of information, and tells why the articles belong together.
Allow time before giving out 4, 5 or 6 folders — according to the number of piles, and 4 pens.
Now I'll give you folders. On the front of each one write your title for the pile of articles. Then put the articles inside their folders. Every article must be put into a folder, so that none are left over.
At the end of the activity put the 4, 5 or 6 folders into the A4 envelope and put the team number on the envelope.

Commentary:
Only one third of the teams identified that some of the articles were not about NZ sports people, and should be in a special reject pile. This was a significant factor in the overall ratings.
