Resources: Macintosh powerbook 5300cs laptop computer with simplified library catalogue software containing a school library catalogue of about 1,000 volumes; card listing questions to be answered; cue card for using the software.

Questions / instructions:
Start up the computer so that the home page is showing on the screen.
In this activity you are going to use a computer catalogue to find information about the books in a library. Here is a card that you can use to help you use the computer if you get stuck.
Show computer cue card to student.
Once the library catalogue is on the screen, I will tell you what you need to find. You can tell me your answers and I will write them down. Once you have put your number in, the computer programme times itself for 8 minutes, so let's see how many you can do in that time. Please enter your student number on the computer now and open the library catalogue.
Have student log in their student number and select library catalogue. Teacher can assist with this if required. Once the programme has started, the student CANNOT be assisted other than with general prompts such as

Commentary:
The year 8 students were quite successful, except for the last question for which the time limit and the task difficulty may have been limiting factors. The year 4 students had much less success, but still enjoyed the task.
