Approach: Station
Resources: A story in four parts presented on two sides of two laminated sheets. Four sets of questions, one for each part of the story.
Description: After silently reading each part of a four part story, the student was instructed to attempt the questions for that part of the story. Three were five multiple choice and one constructed response question for each part. Each successive part introduced increasingly complex vocabulary and ideas. No assistance was given with reading the story or questions.

Description: After silently reading a short factual story of 110 words, the student attempted six multiple choice questions. The text used non-complex vocabulary. No assistance was given with reading the story or the questions.

Commentary: Results show that a high percentage of year 8 students and more than half of year 4 students can competently read non-challenging factual text and use that text to give accurate answers to questions.
