Responses to the 18 rating items are presented for Year 4 students (top) and Year 8 students (above). The results show that, compared to year 4 students:

• a substantially lower proportion of year 8 students really enjoy reading at school;

• a substantially lower proportion of year 8 students think they are very good at reading, or that their teacher  or parent thinks they are very good at reading;

• a substantially higher proportion of year 8 students say that they dont know what their teacher thinks about their reading (even the 37% of year 4 students saying this seems quite high);

• based on responses to questions 6 and 9 to 12, a substantially lower proportion of year 8 students indicated very positive attitudes to reading related activity (the most positive rating was chosen by an average of 46% of year 8 students, compared to 65% of year 4 students).

The responses at both levels indicate significant concerns about reading aloud to the teacher (question 17), and even more so about reading aloud to the class (question 18), with high levels of concern at year 8 level.
