Questions / instructions:
We are going to watch a video about a boy called Tony. The only way that Tony can get to school is on the school bus.

Show video

I have a special friend called Lionheart.

Lionheart can nod his head, and shake his head, and turn it on one side when he's listening.

Lionheart is very good at listening. Sometimes I tell him things that I haven't told anyone else - like why I did'nt want to go to school on the bus.

One morning I whispered to Lionheart, "I'm scared of Mike and his friends. They try to trip me up as I walk down the bus. I'd like to tell them to stop, but I'm too scared."
Lionheart listened.

The next day when the bus stopped I saw Mike grinning at me through the window.

When I climbed on I heard him whispering to his friends. When I walked down the aisle they tried to trip me up.

The video showed that Tony is having a problem, and that he tells Lionheart about the problem. These cards show some of the things that Tony could do.

Show cards

1. If you were in Tony's position, and this was happening to you, what would you probably do?
Pick out the cards that say what you might do.

Read out each card to student.
Allow time to choose cards they want.
For each card chosen ask:

2. What might happen if you did this?

Point to the cards that weren't chosen.
3. What do you think might happen if you did this?

4. Remember, that the only way Tony can get to school is on the bus. Is there anything else you might do that is not on one of these cards?

Record numbers from cards that were chosen.

Commentary
The preferred options were similar for year 4 and year 8 students, except that year 8 students were less inclined to favour "sitting with someone older" and "keep telling Lionheart". About 25 percent more year 8 than year 4 students gave a strong justification of their choices.
