Commentary:
This task, focusing on knowledge of basic facts, was used previously in both 2001 and 2005. Both at year 4 and year 8 level, there was very little change in performance from 2005 to 2009, which means that the marked drop in performance for year 4 students from 2001 to 2005 had been maintained in 2009. That drop is particularly evident where neither number added is 0, 1 or 2, and the sum is more than 12. Pasifika students performed similarly to Pakeha students at both year levels, as did year 8 Mäori students.
