Who is EARU?

Tthe Educational Assessment Research Unit (EARU), at the University of Otago, is contracted by the Ministry of Education to run the National Education Monitoring Project. EARU also manages further research studies which involve deeper analyses of national research data.

NEMP monitors the educational achievements of New Zealand children. It provides a broad picture of the achievements of school students across all major learning areas of the school curriculum so that:

  • trends in educational performance can be identified and reported;
  • good information is available to assist policy makers, curriculum specialists
    and educators with their planning;
  • the public can know about national trends in educational achievement.
