Title: Moana's Island
Author: Andrew Campbell, (ill.) Mrinal Mitra,
Publisher: Reed Publishing (NZ) Ltd, Auckland, NZ: 1995.

Introduction:

This book is called Moana's Island
The story is about a girl called Moana who lives in the city but who was born on an island far away. On her 7th birthday her father takes her back to the island to meet all her cousins.

Text:

It took them a week to get to the island in the rusty
cargo ship. They slept on the deck, with lots of other
people, several chickens and two noisy roosters!

It was cool up there, and they had fun sharing food and singing songs together.

Late one afternoon, Moana saw some coconut palms in the
distance. It was the island at last!

As the ship sailed into the harbour, dozens of boats came to
meet it. They were full of people calling out to their friends
on board.

"Look, Moana," cried her dad. "There's your uncle Rongo and your cousins!"

One of Moana's cousins was called Kimi.
Moana liked Kimi, but he teased her
because she couldn't climb a coconut
palm or dive to the bottom of the lagoon.
"You've lived in the city for too
long," he said.
"You've gone soft!"
